Week 8, Term 4

On Friday we donated non-perishable food items and soft toys to 'Fill the Bus!' These will be distributed to struggling families around Nelson over the Christmas period.Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

 Fun Times at Discovery!

Last week we had an official opening of the new scooter rack. Lots of people in our school community worked really hard to make this happen. We are very appreciative.

We are very lucky to have such a fabulous School Community Group of hardworking parents to make a difference to our school. The Junior Playground is about to be transformed! Work started this weekend and Dianne was first to get her hands mucky!

  • At literacy time we will be looking at short vowel sounds.
  • Our tricky words are eat/everyone.
  • During maths we will start to look at 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Weather and pool temperature permitting we are scheduled to swim Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • All library books are due back now. Please ensure your child has returned their book this week as Val is required to do an audit of the library.
  • Tuesday 9th at 10.15am is the Thank You to Parents morning tea in the library. All welcome.
  •  Have a happy and safe week!

Just a few things….
In the Kowhai Syndicate we are currently covering a ‘Firewise’ topic.
After completing the programme the children will understand that fire can be dangerous and will have learned behaviours that will prevent fires. We also cover how to get out of a burning building quickly and safely.
To date we have covered what a safe fire looks like and safety with matches lighters and candles. We refer to these items as ‘tools’ not toys. A tool is required to have an adult present.
Over the next couple of weeks we will look at smoke alarms, how to get out of a burning room safely, and what firefighters to do rescue people and put out fires. We will complete the topic with a visit from some firefighters. Obviously this topic is quite sensitive for some children and it is delivered according to their level. It may become a topic of conversation at home so please support your child accordingly.

We are actually timetabled to swim this term! As you can imagine it is very weather dependant.
Next week we plan to swim Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
The last week of school it will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Other dates to record on your calendar…
·         Tuesday 9th December ‘Thank You For Your Help Morning Tea’ 10.15am in School Library
·         Tuesday 16th December, Kowhai Big Day Out
·         Friday 19th December, last day of school 2014 (School finishes 12 noon)

Thank you for your ongoing support.
Have a happy and safe week!
